Boogymen

Innocent child with nappy brown hair. Imaginative son not easily scared. Closed eyes at night, opened windows of dreams. Sleepy subconscious awakened with screams.

Child, beautiful child grew tired like every child. Sleep fell upon him and sometimes he'd dream. Dream a little dream of a recurring theme that seemed so real and felt so mean.

Child awoke in his dream and dreamed he was awake, climbed down the basement steps to meet the recurring freaks. Dirty grey concrete floors felt cold beneath the child's bare feet. Light was minimal and as for heat; nonexistent. Sounds of dripping faucet drops echoed against the solid basement foundation walls. Three rooms, one with a shut door.

Whispers could be heard from behind the door but the child couldn't make out any words. Just discomposing murmurs of undefiled evil. Scuffing feet and hideous sounds arose a feeling of anxiety and dismay in the pit of the child's belly. The door creaked open. Darting in and out of the basement's shadows, claws scratched out at the child, scraping his tiny body and precious face. Fangs glimmered in through the darkness. Half men, half wolves with malicious intent paraded around the defenseless child like court jesters cajoling a subject to amuse their king.

An empty black safe sat caddy corner, open, welcoming the boy and offering him refuge. It was father's safe, only now it was open and empty for the child to inhabit. The boy ran to it, folded himself inside ... slammed the door.

Time elapsed and the scurrying sounds of the basement's wicked invaders disappeared. Eventually the boy came out as he noticed the sun's rays fighting their way through dust diseased windows. He realized he was safe. The path back upstairs was again accessible so the child journeyed to his bed so he may awake.

Sleepy child slept with much unrest. Nappy brown hair wakened in mess. No claw marks on his chest, nor a scratch on his face. Sleepy sweet child was glad it was only an imaginary place.
