A Thousand Shades of Gray

Somewhere, hidden between black and white there are a thousand shades of gray
There's a shade for the sun and another for a rainy day
Different shades for love and many for dismay
There's a shade for a predator like there's one for a bird at play.

A decent black and white photo requires at least ten distinct shades of gray
A meaningful life requires at least a thousand, I'd guess, maybe more
There are shades to be found in the simplest of things
A good conversation
An open green field on a tranquil Autumn day
Free running wolves and an eagle soaring to the heavens
A hour spent in conversation with a woman slightly more beautiful than the others
To give my last dime to a beggar more needy than I
To love ... to laugh ... to hurt ... tragedy ... many more.

It's not the lone act that matters, but the significance
One must look beyond the surface
always reading between the lines and listening beyond the spoken word
A never ending journey in the quest for something a little more beautiful
A deeper shade of gray ...

The drums keep rhythm to my song as the sparrows sing along
Time to help the weak while I walk with the strong
Acknowledge when right, with pride; yet admit when wrong
I'm a beggar begging for a life that's long.
